Being true to your values can be tough at the best of times but if you work for an organization that is indifferent to the environment (or worse, aids in its destruction) it can be downright impossible. Workers the world over are finding careers in a growing variety of green industries - no matter what your field is you can bet there’s a green job for you out there. The following sites cover a range of job types, locations and sectors - for best results diversify your job hunt by trying several sites and setting up email alerts for those you find most promising. Still in school? Browse the listings to help target your studies to the jobs you find most exciting. We’ll start by looking at a couple of sites with a global scope and then cover several which are specific to the United States, Canada and the UK.
Finding Green Jobs Anywhere on Earth
![]()
Idealist.org is one of the most comprehensive nonprofit job sites out there - currently listing nearly 8,000 nonprofit jobs, 12,000 volunteer positions and over 1500 internships. While Idealist isn’t exclusively focussed on the environment you can narrow you search by area of focus to include a variety of green job categories.
Those looking for career options in the renewable energy industry should check out Green Energy Jobs. This site just relaunched their job board and while they currently have only 18 listings for a mix of US, UK and other international positions they may be worth watching if this is your field.
Finding Green Jobs in the United States

The Treehugger Job Board lists green jobs in the US almost exclusively, although one or two of the 5-10 new listings each day might be located in Canada or elsewhere. Worth checking out for a wide variety of green jobs - some you didn’t even know existed.
Recently, job search behemoth MonsterTRAK decided to enter the green job hunt fray with it’s new site GreenCareers. Surprisingly this site only had about 40 jobs up when I checked but with backing from Monster you can expect it to grow into a formidable force in the green job market.
Greenjobs primarily lists renewable energy positions located in the US but there are a few listings for other countries as well. With several new listings daily, this one’s worth a look especially if you’re a science/engineering type.
Sustainable Business.com’s Green Dream Jobs will help you find just that. They list 5-10 new environmental positions in the US each day as well as the occasional one for the UK, Canada or elsewhere.
The job board at GreenBiz.com seemed promising at first with 164 current listings but then I noticed there are only 4 listings for October. Now it’s possible there were lots more listings for this month and the positions were filled and the ads removed but I doubt it. This one’s probably worth a pass, at least don’t make it your first stop.
What can I say about EcoEmploy.com that’s not exemplified by their logo? Terrible site design, annoying banner ads - BUT there seem to be 5-10 new jobs listed daily. This might actually be worth a look if only for the fact that jobs listed here may get fewer applicants.
Environmental Career Opportunities claims their newsletter includes over 500 current listings every two weeks but finding the right one for you may prove difficult. ECO’s website lacks a search function (!) and instead lumps jobs together in 10 categories. Difficult to say how many new jobs are posted daily but they appear to by primarily US-based, aside from the International category of course.
In contrast to the previous entry, Environmental Career.com has a great search capability and 5-20 new listings daily - mainly in the US but some international too. Way to go on that innovative search technology Environmental Career.com! (hmm… that name needs work though).
Finding Green Jobs in Canada

Like Idealist.org, CharityVillage.com lists nonprofit jobs and volunteer positions, not just green careers. The positions can be sorted by job category, type, location and organizational focus (including “Environment & Animals”).
Again, GoodWork Canada doesn’t list just green jobs, they list several new jobs daily some of which fit into their “Environment & Nature” category. Almost all the jobs listed here are located in Canada.
Environmental Careers Organization Canada’s job board bills itself as “Canada’s Largest Online Environmental Job Board” with more than 100 postings at any given time. This may be true but it was tough for me to evaluate since ECO Canada’s job board has been down for the last 24 hours.
WorkCabin is a new addition to Canada’s green job market and while there were only 25 listings when I checked, the site seems to be growing with new positions added daily. The current listings are primarily Canadian with a smattering of US, UK and Australian.
Finding Green Jobs in the United Kingdom

British green job hunters are lucky to have EnvironmentJob.co.uk - with 10-20 new listings daily and search by sector this one seems quite promising. Most of the current listings are located in the UK and all international jobs are lumped together in the search engine under “rest of the world”.
The Green Directory’s job listings are quite extensive and are sorted by application deadline which seems quite handy. Several new listings are added each day, most are located in Britain.
The green job market is growing at an amazing rate and these jobs should help you take part. For those already working in environmental jobs, how did you find yours? Any tips for those who are just starting to look?

Great resources for finding a green job. I strongly believe that many who missed the IT wave will be able to participate in this exploding segment of the new economy.
