Newman's Own Organics: Soy Crisps
Tags:

These recently released Newman's Own Organics Soy Crisps are pretty darned tasty and addictive, more on that later, first a little about the company:
Newman's Own Organics started out as a division of Newman's Own almost 15 years ago. Like Newman's Own, the Organics side of things is a for-profit enterprise but Paul Newman is the sole shareholder and he donates all the profits to non-profit charities. Since 1982 he's donated over $200 Million to thousands of charities around the world. Damn, that's amazing.
Ok, back to the crisps. I tried the Lightly Salted, Barbecue, White Cheddar and Cinnamon Sugar varieties and enjoyed them all (although the cinnamon took some getting used to). They're like rice cakes only thinner and more delicately crispy while at the same time more substantial. I think that's probably due to the 9g of protein per serving which helps fill you up more than rice cakes would. I love the fact that the ingredients are mostly certified organic by Oregon Tilth and there aren't any unpronounceable items listed. The Lightly Salted Soy Crisps contain organic low fat soy flour, organic rice flour, salt and sunflower oil - nothing else.
Selling for between $2.50 and $3.50 a bag these cost about what I'd expect but given that all the profits go to charity I think they represent exceptional value. The packaging could probably be a little greener but given that the bulk of the ingredients are organic I'd say this is a pretty eco-friendly snack too. Here's our score:

I already love soy crisps and these were above and beyond my expectations! Eating a healthy and tasty snack while proceeds go to charity, how easy is to make a difference.
