I paid about the same price for the Mini for my 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid, brand new off the lot ($18,600). My Civic Hybrid averaged about 48 mpg over the 28,000 miles I've driven it. Much better than the 32/40 mpg of the Mini.
Now, granted you can't get a new Civic Hybrid for that price anymore, but the fact remains that with a little bit of an historical perspective, you see that there's no reason to automatically discount hybrids. Given gas prices in California, if I'd have bought an '04 Mini at the time and driven it 28,000, it would have cost me $500 more in gas, even after the $600 difference in price.
Agreed. While I think it's important to highlight the availability of efficient traditional gas vehicles a list like this should really include some hybrid options. Also where's the SMART?
